BACKSLIDING

MEMORY VERSE: “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draws back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him,” – Hebrews 10:38

BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 10:19-39

INTRODUCTION:

Often we find someone who starts off very well in the Christian race and then cools off later. Many times someone who used to be very hot for the Lord may even leave the Lord completely. We are all kept by the grace and strength of the Lord. However, we must constantly remember the warning of 1 Corinthians 10:12 because if we deliberately refuse His grace and assistance, we will fall.

WHAT IS BACKSLIDING AND HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?

Backsliding simply means turning away from God (I Kings 11:9). It is growing cold and leaving the first love (Revelations 2:4).
Backsliding is growing cold and losing interest in the Lord, the Bible, prayer, church attendance and witnessing. It is turning from God and turning to the world (Hebrews 10:38). Backsliding rarely happens suddenly. It is a gradual process. It may take weeks, months or even years before the process is complete.

CAUSES AND RESULTS OF BACKSLIDING

There are so many causes of backsliding but we shall list as many as possible of them: (a) Covetousness (Genesis 13:10) (b) Pride (Proverbs 16:18)  (c) Self-centeredness (Proverbs 14:14) (d) Disobedience (I Samuel 15:22) (e) Love of money (I Timothy 6:10) (f) Ambition for power (Acts 8:19) (g) Love of the world (2 Timothy 4:10) (h) Failure to pray (1Thessalonians 5:17) (i) Failure to read/study the Bible (2 Timothy 2:15) (j) Failure to attend church (Hebrews 10:25) (k) Failure to obey the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) (I) Failure to witness Christ (Matthew 10:33) (m) Failure to walk in the light (I John 1:7). As a result of backsliding, there will be a loss of joy and happiness, a loss of peace of mind and power. Murmuring and darkness will replace songs of praise and light. A backslider may never enter Heaven (Hebrews 6:4-6).

CONCLUSION

To the backslider God says, return and be forgiven, return and be healed (Jeremiah 3:22; Hosea 14:4).Are you backsliding? Return to God today. Tomorrow may be too late.

o WEDNESDAY:Luke 9:62 – The kingdom of God is not meant for backsliders.
o THURSDAY:Romans 14:7 – Do not leave God because you belong to him in life and death.
o FRIDAY: 2 Peter 2:6-8- Even one righteous man among many sinners would be saved. Be righteous.
o SATURDAY: Nehemiah 13:26- God will always welcome back the backslider who repents.
o SUNDAY: I Peter 4:19 – God will not take any excuse for backsliding.
